Meena Mocks a Miracle
My name is Meena and I am 9 years old. Spending the summer with my grandma was always fun. Every summer was the same. Church meetings, canning fruit and playing in the park. This summer was just like all the rest until Granny met that lady in the store. We were on our way out when the lady made us miss the bus. Granny's eyes aren't so good anymore so she don't drive. We take the bus every Saturday to the store. She likes to cook a big Sunday dinner even though it's just me, her and Big Daddy.
I can't remember how they started talking but the lady told Granny that God had something for her. She said that God told her to make sure Granny didn't leave the store without first knowing that HE cared for her. Granny seem to believe the lady right off. Not me. She wasn't tall enough to hear God's voice. Granny started to cry just as the bus passed by the window. I was so mad at that lady. God didn't tell her nothing. In church the preacher always says that you bet not lie or you will have to swim in the lake with the devil. That lady was in big trouble. I hoped she was a good good swimmer.
When we caught the next bus, Granny was really tired. Most of the time when we ride, she always lets me sit by the window but this time she took the window seat. Soon she fell asleep. I watched out the window for the hair shop. It was right by our house. When I saw it, I tried to wake Granny. She was sleeping real good and wouldn't get up. The bus driver saw me shaking her and stopped the bus. He tried to wake her too but she must have been having a good dream because she was still sleeping. The driver got his radio and called for help. I don't know why all the fuss. Granny was old and she got tired a lot. Anyway, when the ambulance came, they let Granny sleep on the bed in the back. I got to ride up front. They could have taken us home but they took us to the hospital.
I knew Granny was special because they gave a room before anyone else. She kept right on sleeping. It looked like a good nap too. She was smiling. They wouldn't let me go in the room with her so I had to wait by the pop machine and tv. I wasn't scared though because Big Daddy was coming and he always knew what to do. Granny would wake up for him.
When Big Daddy came in, the doctor met him at the door. They talked real quiet like grown ups do when they don't want you to hear what they saying. I watched the big door close behind them and started watching cartoons until they came back out. When Big Day said I could come seeGranny, I jumped outta my chair and took off running. I had so many questions. I wanted to know how her nap was? If she knew I knew which stop to get off the bus? If she liked the ride on the bed in the ambulance? If she was looking for me when she woke up?
When I got in the room, Granny was still sleeping and Big Daddy looked like he was gonna cry. He said that Granny had gone on to heaven and we would see her again when we got there. I'm only 9 but I know that means you dead and not coming home. I asked Big Daddy if I could talk to her and he said yes. I walked over to Granny and climbed in the bed. She let me sometimes sleep with her at home. She felt so soft and she was still smiling. They had to be wrong. My Granny wasn't dead. She was just tired. We missed the bus and had to wait a long time for the next one. It was hot outside and Granny always said the heat will make ya sleepy. That's when I remembered the lady and what she said to Granny. I turned my face to Granny's and reminded her of what the lady said. I'm not sure why but I just kept saying it over and over. God cares for you. God cares for you. When I said it, the third time, Granny heard me. I felt her chest go up and down. I could feel her breath on my forehead. I looked up into her face and she was still smiling but this time her eyes were open. All of a sudden the room got really busy. Big Daddy picked me up and started squeezing me. The people started touching Granny's arms and chest.
On that day, Granny told me what else the lady had said. She told Granny that the devil was gonna try to kill her but God was going to make it alright. I didn't really understand it all but Granny told me it was a miracle.
Why?
There once was a girl who didn't believe in God
No matter what happened she always asked why
Why did the bus hit the kid on the curb
Why did the woman fall down in the tub
Why do parents file for divorce
Why do police get killed on the force
Why do people pretend they care
Why does pollution fill the air
Why do gangs rule my school
Why do even the teachers break the rules
There once was a girl who didn't believe in God
No matter what happened she always asked why
